FOR CHRIST’S SAKE

I was reading a recent social media post recently entitled “What would Jesus do?” and the author claims being raised by Christians and believing that caring for others was the word of the Lord. Now she gets called a stupid socialist by those who claim they are the religious party. It got me thinking about growing up Catholic in the South and how most every Christian value I was taught and understood then and now is on the buffet for those screaming for “owning the libs.” Are we now to believe that caring for our neighbor, making sure Mother Earth and her inhabitants are healthy, and having leaders with a moral compass all are political stances? What the hell, literally? I’m grateful that I was told growing up the stories of Jesus. Those lessons framed my morality and spirituality with tenets by which to live. An exercise I once attempted was to lay all of the organized religious and belief foundations atop another to find that the “Golden Rule” and other soul assets are often in the midst of them all. In grammar school I played stump the nun and would ask, if only Catholics can go to Heaven and Baptists think that only they can go to Heaven, does that make sense? What about my dad’s Jewish college buddies? Being told back then just to believe is no different than hearing propaganda in the name of religion now. So, I can only surmise that we have some carpetbaggers wrapping themselves in the cloak of religion for power, greed, and money. Does that sound like Jesus? Religious or not, true believers need to drop the political baggage and do the work of the good word. Amen. @thepeacestore
